Seminar Overview
Starting an Angel Organization provides a comprehensive overview
of steps in creating the right angel organization for community
leaders, economic development departments, and champions with
limited experience. This full-day seminar is a hands-on experience
that includes expert perspectives, small group case studies,
and group participation. Networking opportunities with faculty
and participants are available throughout the day.
This seminar was developed by a contractor of the Kauffman Foundation
with content contributed by angel experts around the country.
Workshop participants will explore Preston’s book “A
Guidebook to Developing the Right Angel Organization for Your
Community.” Participants receive:
- A copy of Susan L. Preston’s Guidebook.
- A resource CD with blank forms to use after the workshop and
research data to make a case.
- Hands-on practice and small group work.
Who Should Attend?
- Champions, community leaders, and others who wish to start
an angel organization.
- Entrepreneurial and business support center leadership.
- University leaders and directors for entrepreneurship, innovation,
or emerging technologies.
- Community economic development leaders.
- Leaders for incubators, business accelerator, and other business
programs.

- Assessing your community’s readiness for an angel
organization.
- Exploring investment structure.
- Choosing the right membership structure.
- Attracting initial investors and additional members to your
organization.
- Selecting between a member led or manager led organization.
- Determining the most appropriate legal structure.
- Planning a financial structure.
- Operating once the organization is in place.
- Overcoming special challenges along the way.
Who is the Faculty for This Angel Seminar?
This workshop features a combination of expert facilitation
and videotaped perspectives by angel experts and leaders
from a variety of existing angel organizations.
Sue Preston is currently a consultant to Ewing Marion Kauffman
Foundation, focusing specifically on initiatives related to
angel investors and angel organizations, as well as the advancement
of women entrepreneurs. She is the author of multiple books
on angel investing. She is also founder and past-president
of Seraph Capital Forum, an all-women's accredited investor
angel investment forum, which educates women on early stage
investment and provides a venue for introduction to promising
new companies.
Angel experts share their perspectives via case study video
segments throughout the workshop. These video segments are also
included on a take home resource CD:
