Orlando, Fla. (March 14, 2003) - The development of new companies to commercialize new technologies might be the best way to generate a stronger economic rebound that will impact the entire Central Florida region, says the associate director of the University of Central Florida Technology Incubator.
The UCF Technology Incubator was recently awarded $100,000 from Orange County to help boost the area economy. The funds are part of a larger $2.2 million Economic Stimulus package.
"The need to move more quickly from concept to commercial product has never been greater," said Carol Ann Dykes, associate director of the program. "All across the nation, technology incubator efforts are producing big results helping young companies do just that. Our program is one of the best in the U.S., and we are focused on setting the standard nationwide."
Dykes said Orange County's economic stimulus package is a strong sign that County Commissioners are behind the approach. "They made an impressive statement of their understanding of the importance of entrepreneurial technology based economic development. Orange County has been and continues to be one of our strongest partners" said Dykes.
Dykes added the Orange County funding will help fund a resource center at the UCF Technology Incubator's headquarters facility in Research Park, adjacent to the university. The center will provide videoconferencing facilities, business information research tools, and improved telecommunications infrastructure, Dykes said.
