UCF Technology Will Share in $10 Million State Grant to Fund Laser Development

Model Program Key Link to Commercializing New Technologies

Orlando, Fla. (April 18, 2003) - The University of Central Florida Technology Incubator will get a small portion of the $10 million grant the Governor's Emerging Technology Commission of Excellence awarded to the university recently to help fund laser development.

Carol Ann Dykes, associate director of the UCF Technology Incubator, said her focus will be on helping the UCF School of Optics commercialize technologies it develops with the grant.

Dykes said the university program focuses on developing laser technology for computers, ultra-high bandwidth communications, 3-D imaging and biophotonics.

"The distance from concept to commercial product has never been shorter," said Dykes. "Our role will be to assist research scientists in developing commercial outlets for their technology."
