Award Winning Australian Wireless Firm Establishes US Headquarters in Orlando

Orlando, Fla. – Cohda Wireless is the latest firm to join the University of Central Florida Technology Incubator and open offices in Orlando in the Central Florida Research Park. The company was founded in 2002 to commercialize a new generation of mobile wireless broadband technologies out of the Institute for Telecommunications Research (ITR) at the University of South Australia.

Martin D. Suter, Chief Executive Officer of Cohda Wireless said “the multiple-award winning technology firm’s new Orlando office is its first step in expanding operations to the U.S.”

“As we continue to grow Metro Orlando’s technology economy, Cohda Wireless is a perfect addition,” said John Fremstad, Vice President for Technology Industry Development, Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission. “Companies developing and providing new technologies, such as Cohda Wireless, will make Metro Orlando a hub of knowledge-based industries in the 21st century.”

“The UCF Technology Incubator ranks as one of the most successful university-based technology incubators in the U.S. and is one of the reasons Cohda targeted Central Florida as its first U.S. location”, said Martin Suter.

“For many technology specialties, Central Florida ranks as the most desirable location in the world,” Suter said. “This area will likely see substantial growth in technology industries as a result of its growing reputation worldwide,” he added.

The CohdaWireless flagship product, Cohda Mobile-OFDM™ is a breakthrough technology that is one of the only technologies designed to address the harshest RF environments; outdoor, non-LOS, high-speed mobility scenarios. Present and proposed standards, including Wi-Fi and WiMAX do not address this most demanding of use cases. Suter said it typically costs upwards of $150,000 per square mile to deploy standard wireless broadband such as Wi-FI communications systems due to their limited range and line-of-sight constraints. Currently available standards-based technologies are neither designed for nor robust enough for mission-critical situations, Suter said.c

Cohda will be demonstrating its product at technology exhibitions through the rest of the year and plans to ship its first systems to North America early next year. The firm is seeking $5 to $10 million in capital investment to market its technology worldwide. Cohda is also targeting large technology companies –– Alcatel, Cisco, Intel, Motorola, and Qualcomm, among others – as potential investors and strategic partners.
