CARDIOVASCULAR SCIENCES, INC. Surpasses Expectations in Research to Develop Anti-adhesion Material
ORLANDO, FLORIDA (March 19, 2007) Cardiovascular Sciences, Inc. has completed its initial phase of funded research at the University of Central Florida to develop a post-surgical anti-adhesion material. Adhesive scar tissue forms as a result of any surgical procedure and often creates pain and other complications for patients. The adhesions can impair healing, restrict movement, and make further surgical procedures difficult or unfeasible.
Cardiovascular Sciences’ research is targeted at developing a material that can be applied internally during surgery to almost completely prevent adhesive tissue formation. The Company’s sponsored research is being conducted with the Chemistry Department at UCF and led by Dr. Kevin Belfield, PhD. Initial results have exceeded expectations both in terms of time for development and in the physical characteristics of the material.
Cardiovascular now has several prototypes of their proprietary anti-adhesion material and the technology to manipulate its properties. The company is ready to move ahead with expanded animal studies and further investigate safety and efficacy of the product. The first product should be market-ready 18 to 24 months after initiation of expanded animal studies.
The initial target market is in the veterinary field with a market potential for anti-adhesion applications of $250 million in the United States alone. Applications and products for the human market will be addressed following successful applications in the veterinary field.
Cardiovascular Sciences joined the UCF Technology Incubator a year ago and is housed in the Incubator’s Central Florida Research Park facilities. Dr. Lawrence Hooper, Director of Clinical and Regulatory Affairs stated, “The Incubator is the principle factor that has allowed us to progress this far and at this rate. Our participation in the program removes a lot of the usual worries and stress so that we can more fully concentrate on those issues and problems specific to our field of endeavor.”
